of the Holy Spirit, Bialystok
The church of the Holy Spirit
located in Bialystok at Antoniuk Fabryczny 13 St. It is the greatest from
Orthodox church in Poland and the greater from Orthodox church in Europe. The
pressing need for new churchus in Bialystok had long been felt. In 1970 the
first attempts were made to obtain consent for establishing a new parish, but
it was not until 1982 that the government authorities agreed to permit the
construction of a new Orthodox church in Bialystok. The excavation of the
building site began in June of 1982, and the 1st August 1982 the foundation
stone was blessed by His Excellency Bishop SAWA. The church under the
invocation of the Holy Spirit consecrated on the day 16.05.1999. His Eminence
SAWA, Metropolitan Warsaw and All Poland was preside over the ceremony.
Metropolitan SAWA, as previous Elder of the Bialystok-Gdansk Diocese, was the
author initiative of building of the church. At consecrating to take part also
Elder of the Bialystok-Gdansk Diocese, His Excellence Bishop JAKOB and His
Excellences: Bishop of Lublin ABEL, Bishop of Bielsk GREGORY, and also Bishop
of Grodno ARTEMIUS.
The parish began to function
on February 1983, under invocation of the Holy Spirit. At the beginning was
adapted old house for temporary chapel. Priest Jerzy Boreczko is the
founding rector. The parish feast - Holy Spirit day (second day of the
Pentecost or Green Holiday).
The church has the
following parameters: length 55m, width 38m, height 50m.

2250m2, cubature 27000m3, basement 1000m2,
basement floor space 600m2, balcony space 270m2.
Total number of
parishioners, which church is accomodation - 2500 persons.
Jan Kabac is the
architect of the church.
The roofing of the entire
church is covered with copper sheets. Three different kinds of brick are used
in the construction: common, chequer and clinkcer; the latter being used for
facing and had to be specially ordered in the three different colors. There are
five domes surmounting the church. The principal dome measures 23m in height,
and has a 7m cross.
The church has three altars:
the principle altar is under the patronage of the Holy Spirit; the second altar
is under the patronage of Saint Sawa the Illumined; the third altar, located in
the basement church, is under the patronage of the Icon of Mother of God as
the Consolation of all Sorrows and all Joys. Also belfry will build in future,
(60m in height), that would realise after finish building of the church.
The church is building for
a good-will contribution of parishioners and other Orthodox Christians and
thanks to social action, that which is organized by parisioners.
The visit on 1998 year (15.10.1998)
of His Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch (of Constantinople) BARTHOLOMEW I was
important event for parish.
