Church
of St. Mary Magdalene, Bialystok
The Church under the invocation
of St. Mary Magdalene is the oldest church in Bialystok. It is situated on the
hill in the city centre, near the cross-road of the streets: Krakowska,
Grunwaldzka and Kalinowskiego, next to amphitheatre. The church dates from
XVIII century. The Branicki family established the church and the cemetery,
which belonged to "Bialystok's dominion". Until the half of XIX century it was
administered by the heirs of the family, serving as a municipal cemetery. The
taking over of the cemetery by the City Treasury in 50s finally ended a
controversial dispute between catholic and orthodox parish. In the 70s, by the
decision of the then authorities, the cemetery was destroyed and an
amphitheatre was built. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is the chapel of
St. Nicola's parish. It also serves as a garrison church (military
parish under the invocation Apostles Peter and Paul). Father kapitan Igor
Siegien is the rector of the military parish.
